Whether serving the community as a general store or a veterinary hospital, 9 Elizabeth Street is a heritage building with a storied history in Guelph’s beloved Ward neighbourhood. The property is a short walk from where the Wood family’s manufacturing business operated for more than 60 years, and would have been a frequent stop for many of its workers.
Our goal after acquiring this property? Reimagine and expand it to be a modern, multi-unit residential building while honouring the character and charm of the neighbourhood.
We knew our team could bring it new life and purpose while adding inventory to the Ward’s tight rental housing market. The building is ideal rental housing, centrally located adjacent to all the shops and services in Downtown Guelph as well as being an easy walk to the city’s Transit hub.
Completed in 2022, this adaptive reuse project required careful restoration and additions to create three one-bedroom stacked apartments, each with its own front door and private balcony space, and onsite parking.
One of our priorities was to ensure that the ground floor unit is barrier-free, adding much-needed accessible housing for tenants with limited mobility. Our design team worked closely with our tenant to ensure a fully accessible unit that meets her needs.
Internationally celebrated artist Seth was brought in to design the exterior priority number for a look that has made 9 Elizabeth Street a signature building in the neighbourhood.
